Author Guidelines

Articles must be submitted in accordance with the guidelines established herein and with the applicable ABNT standards, particularly NBR 6022 (articles in periodical publications) and related standards, including NBR 6023 (references), NBR 6028 (abstract), and NBR 10520 (citations).

1. METADATA

At the time of article submission, the metadata must be completed in full, in accordance with the guidelines set forth below, failing which the submission may be subject to immediate rejection.

  • Authorship: Full names of all authors must be provided in the order in which they are to appear in the publication.

  • E-mail: The e-mail address of each author must be provided. These addresses will be made publicly available in the published version of the article.

  • URL: The ORCID identifier of each author must be provided.

  • Institutional affiliation: Institutional affiliation refers to the academic or professional relationship maintained by the author with an institution at the time the research was conducted or the article was submitted, whether as a faculty member, student, researcher, or staff member. Where two relevant institutional affiliations exist—for example, where an author is a faculty member at one institution and a doctoral student at another—both affiliations may be provided when they are equally relevant to the development of the research. Authors without an institutional affiliation may identify themselves as an “independent researcher,” indicating the city, state/province, and country.

  • Country: The country of the author’s primary institutional affiliation must be indicated.

  • Biography: A brief biographical note for each author must be provided, beginning with the institution at which the author serves as a faculty member, followed by the respective city, state/province abbreviation, and country in parentheses. This should be followed by the author’s academic qualifications, beginning with the highest degree obtained, as well as other affiliations with scholarly associations and professional organizations.

  • Title: The title must be provided in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, with only the first letter of the sentence capitalized, and must contain no more than ten words.

  • Abstract: An abstract must be provided in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, consisting of between 100 and 250 words, in accordance with ABNT NBR 6028. It must address the following elements: subject matter (the research topic); objective (the purpose and/or contribution of the study); methodology (the research methods, techniques, and/or procedures); and results achieved (or the thesis advanced). The abstract must consist of a sequence of concise sentences, preferably presented in a single paragraph, using the active voice and the third-person singular, and must not include citations or references.

  • Keywords: Up to five terms must be provided in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, using lowercase letters.

  • Language: Portuguese (abbreviation = pt); Spanish (abbreviation = es); or English (abbreviation = en).

  • Funding: Sources of research funding must be indicated, where applicable.

  • References: A complete list of the references cited in the article must be provided in alphabetical order by the authors’ surnames, with one blank line between entries, in accordance with ABNT NBR 6023.

2. TEXTUAL STRUCTURE

The text must be structured into introduction, development, conclusion, and references to the sources consulted.

The introduction must present the delimitation of the subject matter, the relevance of the research, the objective, methodology, research problem, hypothesis and/or thesis advanced, as well as an overview of the organization of the article’s sections.

The development must encompass the theoretical foundation of the research, presenting in an organized and coherent manner the concepts, arguments, data, and other elements used to support the analysis, consistently with the title, abstract, introduction, and conclusion.

The conclusion must concisely synthesize the findings, address the proposed objective, present the thesis advanced, and indicate its contribution to legal scholarship. No new arguments that have not been previously discussed in the development may be introduced in the conclusion.

3. FORMATTING

Submitted manuscripts must contain a minimum of 4,000 (four thousand) and a maximum of 15,000 (fifteen thousand) words, excluding footnotes and references, and must comply with the following formatting requirements:

  1. Paper size: A4;

  2. Margins: 3 cm at the top and left; 2 cm at the bottom and right;

  3. Font: Arial, 12-point;

  4. Line spacing: single spacing, with no spacing before or after paragraphs;

  5. Paragraphs: justified, with a first-line indentation of 1.25 cm.

  • The numbering of sections and subsections must be progressive and use Arabic numerals, beginning with the introduction and continuing through the final considerations. The development may be subdivided at the author’s discretion.

  • All emphasis must be indicated through the use of italics, including foreign words. Bold type must be reserved exclusively for titles and subtitles.

  • Citations of up to three lines must be incorporated into the body of the text and enclosed in quotation marks, without the use of italics. Citations exceeding three lines must be presented in a separate paragraph, with a 4 cm indentation, 10-point font, and without quotation marks, in accordance with ABNT NBR 10520 (items 5.2 and 5.3).

  • Citations in a foreign language must be translated into the language of the article. The original-language passage must be provided in a footnote.

  • All citations must include a reference to the author(s), preceded or followed by the author’s/authors’ surname(s), year of publication, and page number, in accordance with the author-date system, as established by ABNT NBR 10520 (item 6.3).

  • Whenever possible, the use of footnotes should be avoided. They should be used only when indispensable for presenting concepts or explanations that cannot appropriately be incorporated into the body of the text. Footnotes should preferably be neither numerous nor excessively long.

  • References must include only works effectively cited or otherwise used in the article and must be listed at the end of the text in alphabetical order, in accordance with ABNT NBR 6023.

IMPORTANT: Manuscripts that do not comply with these guidelines will be returned to the author(s) for revisions before being forwarded for double-anonymous peer review. Accordingly, in order to expedite the editorial process, authors are strongly advised to carefully verify compliance with all guidelines before submitting their manuscripts.

Submission Preparation Checklist

  • All submissions must comply with the following requirements:

    • Article authorship may be shared by a maximum of three authors.

    • At least one author must hold a doctoral degree in Law or in a field related to the subject matter of the article.

    • The article must constitute an original and unpublished contribution and must not be under consideration for publication by another journal or publisher.

    • The subject matter of the article must be consistent with the Editorial Scope of the Journal, with preference given to topics related to the Federal Justice system. In the case of a special issue, the article must address one of the thematic areas specified in the relevant call for papers.

    • The submission file must be editable and prepared using Microsoft Word 97 or a later version (file format “.doc” or “.docx”), in accordance with the style and bibliographic requirements set forth in the “Guidelines for Authors,” particularly the applicable ABNT standards (NBR 6022, NBR 6023, NBR 6028, and NBR 10520). The article must use the author-date citation system and contain between 4,000 (four thousand) and 15,000 (fifteen thousand) words, excluding footnotes and references.

    • Authors must take all necessary measures to remove any form of identifying information from the submitted file. The body of the manuscript must not contain elements such as biographical notes, footnotes identifying the authors or their qualifications, or references to works previously published by the authors that could disclose their identity. In addition, author identification must be removed from the file properties.

    • Submission through the platform constitutes the authors’ tacit declaration and assurance of: (a) ownership of the copyright, with the authors assuming exclusive responsibility for any claims relating thereto; (b) the unpublished nature of the article; (c) the originality of the content, in compliance with Law No. 9,610/1998, with all publications relevant to the preparation of the manuscript submitted to the Journal duly cited. Authors acknowledge that plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical and unacceptable editorial conduct and is the sole responsibility of the author; and (d) the absence of any violation of academic ethics.

    • Submission constitutes tacit authorization for the material to be published on an open-access basis under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), free of charge and without limitations as to duration, territory, or means of dissemination. It also authorizes the Journal to make any adjustments necessary to conform the manuscript to the journal’s graphic and editorial style and to ensure compliance with the standards of formal written Portuguese.

    • Any funding or financial support received from commercial or non-commercial sources must be disclosed in the relevant fields of the online submission system. Authors must also declare whether or not there is any potential conflict of interest that could compromise the work submitted.

    • If the article involves research involving human participants, it must be accompanied by a statement confirming that all procedures were conducted in accordance with the applicable laws and relevant institutional guidelines and that approval was obtained from the appropriate institutional review boards or ethics committees.

    • IMPORTANT: The following files must be uploaded separately during the submission process:
      a) Article manuscript: an editable file in “.doc” or “.docx” (Word) format. The removal of all author-identifying information is mandatory.
      b) Form: a “.pdf” file, duly completed and electronically signed by all co-authors, available at: https://revista.trf3.jus.br/index.php/rtrf3/pt_BR/libraryFiles/downloadPublic/2.

Copyright Notice

By submitting the academic text to the Journal of the Federal Regional Court of the 3rd Region, the authors declare that they hold the copyright and are exclusively responsible for any claims related to such rights; they also guarantee that the text is unpublished and that there is no infringement of academic ethics.

The authors retain the copyright and grant the Journal of the Federal Regional Court of the 3rd Region the right of first publication, free of charge and without limitations as to term, territory or any other, authorizing the publication of the work in this journal under the Creative Commons License - Attribution 4.0 International - CC BY 4.0, which allows sharing as long as authorship and initial publication in this Journal are acknowledged.
